Creating a Balanced Life
for Sensitive People
by Jennifer Baltz |

Let’s face it…we live in a world that is often
overwhelming. It’s difficult for most people to balance
work, home and family, even more so if you’re a
spiritually sensitive person.
Sensitive people not only think
differently than most people do, we also experience the
world differently. We aren’t necessarily more
emotional…instead we feel other people’s energy and
emotions in a much deeper way. If your co-worker is
having a bad day, you might match that energy and before
you know it, you’re down in the dumps, too. In a sense,
we have less psychic insulation than the average
person. And when you get more sensory input, it can
often create more confusion, and a feeling of overwhelm,
being stuck, or lacking energy to do what’s next on your
list.
Sensitive people come to me as an
intuitive reader not only to get a fresh perspective on
their lives, but mainly for help in getting unstuck. And
there are meditative tools you can use to do just that.
But here are my favorite tips in the meantime to get you
started… three things you can do to manage overwhelm and
create a balanced and happy life:
1. Be Present in the Now. Eckhart Tolle has
the right idea here. It’s easy to get stuck in a pastime
moment, in a daydream, or even in a possible future
scenario. When this happens, it divides your attention
and focus, creates more stress, and reduces your power
to create in present time.
What you can do now:
How much time do you spend out of present time? If you
find your attention dwelling on past events,
woolgathering, or out in the future, stop and take a
deep breath. Then, ask yourself “Is there something I
can do right now about this?” If it’s an old argument,
maybe it’s time to forgive or mend fences. If it’s a
future you want to create, think of one concrete step
you can take right now to make it happen. Wherever
you put your attention, that’s where your energy goes.
By focusing your attention in the present, you have more
power, awareness, and energy to handle what’s happening
now—and create a future that works well.
2. Be Yourself. Sensitive people tend to be
very reactive to what other people want or need. Women
in particular are hardwired this way—it helps us keep
our kids in one piece until they grow up! But it’s not
healthy to give up part of yourself in order to please
someone else. And it almost always backfires…most
critical people will never be satisfied with anything
you do to please them. Remember, you are unique and
special in the world. Develop your talents and enjoy
them!
What you can do now:
Ask yourself this question: What’s one thing I can do
today to feed my spirit? Just notice what comes up.
If it’s too big to do today, scale it back a bit to
something you really can do now. Remember, baby steps DO
work!
3. Feed Your Intuition
Intuition is a sensitive person’s special gift. You
already have it in spades (Yes, you really do!) But
when your senses are overwhelmed with input, your
intuitive voice gets numbed out. Oprah calls intuition
“God whispers.” She’s right. Intuition does speak in a
whisper, not a shout. And intuition’s effect in your
life can be profound: It can help you create greater
success and better communication, with much less effort
and stress.
What
you can do now: Quiet time each day helps to
develop your intuition. So turn off that
awareness-numbing television (a tool a lot of sensitives
use to block out all of the extra input), and take back
some quiet time to reflect, journal, meditate, or just
breathe and enjoy being in your own skin.
Creating
balance and space for yourself in your life is a
process, not an end result. It’s something you can do
every day, in small measured steps.
