Living Soulfully
by Chrissie Blaze |
We stand on the shores of a vast universe
that continues to amaze and inspire us with awe and
wonder every time a new discovery is made. Despite
recent developments in rockets, computers, and other
marvels of science, we are painfully ignorant of the
world in which we live. We are even more ignorant of our
inner universe, which for some reason many have
forgotten about and ignore, despite an ever more urgent
need to uncover the truth of our existence. If we take
the time to be silent and reflect, if we are really
honest, somewhere deep within us we know that something
is missing.
Our everyday life has become
increasingly competitive, full of anxiety, disease,
stress and the pursuit of materialism. Most of us are on
a seemingly endless treadmill with little relief in
sight. Because of this we often develop an inner
emptiness, sense of futility and restlessness.
This is because we are actually
spiritual beings going through life in physical bodies,
not the other way around. Spirituality is our true home
and in order to find our way in life (our destiny) we
need to find ways to put our spiritual life – our soul
– back at the center. The great mystic and scientist,
Albert Einstein, summed it up when he said:
"A human being is part of the
whole, called by us ‘universe,’ a part limited in
space and time. He experiences himself, his thoughts and
feelings, as something separate from the rest, a kind of
optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is kind
of a prison for us restricting us to our personal
desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to
us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison
by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all
living creatures and the whole of nature in its
beauty."
We are so conditioned by materialism
that we may wonder why we should give our compassion
without any thought of return. Society encourages us
instead to have possessions in abundance. It takes
courage and honesty to be aware of materialistic
conditioning, and to break away from this. We have only
to look at the ebb and flow of nature, the sunrise each
morning, or to experience the inevitable in-breath
followed by the out-breath, to realize that this is the
way we should function; this is the way we are meant to
be.
Once you feel the opening of your heart
and the flow of Love energy through you, you will
realize more fully the connectedness of mankind. It is
said that originally we all came from the same family,
so that everyone on earth is a relative! We are bound
together so tightly that everything we do affects
everyone else. We are constantly improving the lot of
mankind, or contributing to making our future more
bleak. This is known as the "karmic pattern"
of mankind that we constantly affect and in which we
share, no matter how evil or how saintly we may be.
One of the most important decisions we
can make on a daily basis is whether we will contribute
towards a future of peace and enlightenment for us and
our children’s children, or whether through our
limited thinking and selfish acts, we will contribute
towards the inevitable destruction of our race.
When we live soulfully, we find
ourselves with an ever deepening desire to help others,
and to discover our unique destiny – what we are truly
born to do. This is not just a career, family or home,
but some task or path that your soul has set for you in
this life. As Viktor Frankl found, if we do not
discover our purpose, then it can result in dis-ease or
sickness, as well as frustration. Millions of people are
sick because they have not yet found their path of
soulful living. These people need all our help and our
healing.
Healing is one of the highest
expressions of our soul. Healing knows no prejudice or
boundaries; it knows no barriers of race, color or
creed, no barriers of time or distance. We can heal our
families in the same room, just as easily as we can heal
a stranger across the world.
Sending healing to a person you never
met, and may not even like, is one of the highest
aspects of love or compassion to which we can aspire.
When we are capable of a higher aspect of love than
purely personal love, we feel for the trials and
suffering of mankind and want to help.
We are an essential part of the whole,
and all our thoughts and actions have a ripple effect
that affects the whole. Once we realize this and really
accept it into our lives, our outlook and way of
thinking changes. We develop a "healing
consciousness," where we bring harmony and light
into the world. In this state, we do not seek glory or
reward, but act in a way that our soul dictates to us
that we should.
You may already have a "healing
consciousness" and not even be aware of it. When
you see a child who is obviously sick or injured in some
way, do you want to reach out and touch that child? When
you see a dog lurch out into traffic, does not your
heart lurch with it? When an elderly person hesitates to
cross the road, as traffic races past, do you want to
rush over and help? You may say, of course, that is
normal human kindness. Yes, it is, and it is this
wonderful quality which if expressed and acted upon –
and action is the key - can change our world.
In these days of change, spiritual
desire, idealism and theory are no longer enough. It is
the service we give to others and to our world, and the
spiritual actions we perform that are the true hallmarks
of soulful living.
