Carol
Adrienne's work and teachings have been a great
inspiration to me! In August of 1998, about four months after my
father passed away, I read about one of Carol's
workshops in a Learning Annex catalog and
synchronistically found her book on a bookshelf at the
bookstore. The themes of her teachings were
familiar and comforting, as they confirmed the thoughts
and ideas my father had shared with me shortly before
his passing. Her books and workshops ignited my
spiritual curiosity, setting me on my soulful life path,
which led to the very creation of
SoulfulLiving.com! Carol's participation has been
an integral part of SoulfulLiving.com, at its soul
level! Thank you, Carol, with all my heart!

"In the Company of Writers"
Last month I participated in a writers retreat and
conference in Sedona, Arizona, organized by writing coach, Tom
Bird, which turned out to be an amazing look at what makes
writers tick. The urge to write and to express our thoughts
and observations lurks deep within many of us. This creative
urge, however, may be thwarted by fear and insecurities.
I first met Tom Bird through a synchronistic circumstance,
and was delighted when he invited me to co-lead this retreat
for writers. Tom has a unique system for helping unblock
writers and get them writing from a deeper and truer level
than ever before. The six day retreat was followed by a nuts
and bolts conference about publishing realities. The reception
to the program was so successful that we decided to schedule
another session in Sedona in July (let us know if you’re
interested) in addition to the one already scheduled September
23-30 at the University of Las Vegas in Nevada.
The week-long program in Sedona created new levels of
enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment for every individual
there. Not only did the participants get inspired, but one of
the speakers, Lindsay Gibson, serendipitously received so much
good feedback on her talk, that everyone insisted that she
write a book on the subject!
What Did Your Parents Teach You About Success?
During the retreat, mornings were devoted to exploring the
reasons why writing is so important to each of us. Through
various exercises, we looked into the kinds of early messages
we received about ourselves from parents and family. We
examined our beliefs in order to see what might be affecting
our ability to move forward in the world.
Ask the Universe to Support Your Goals
In order to heighten creativity and attract opportunities
to become more successful with writing, participants were
asked to write clear statements of purpose about what writing
meant to them. No matter what project we are working on, it’s
always a good idea to create a mission statement so that the
universe can fulfill our desires. For example, Writing
frees me. Writing is the doorway to the next step in my life.
Writing is life.
Your Inner Male and Female Must Work Together On Your Goals
We also peeked—through a guided meditation--at the state
of our inner feminine (the creative magnetic part of our
nature that defines what has meaning for us), and the inner
masculine (the dynamic action part of our nature that
implements our plans). This exercise allowed people to see
what really has top priority in the subconscious realm, and
why they might be procrastinating on a project, such as
sending their writing to an agent.
Let The Words Flow
Afternoons were devoted to writing, using Tom Bird’s
unique process which generates an amazing and prolific flow of
originality from places that we hardly knew existed within
ourselves. Writing in the company of writers was an
exhilarating and healing experience. The entire retreat was a
great time to share common dreams and visions, and allow
synchronistic messages and relationships to teach us what we
came together to know. One evening, for example, our group
attended the movie Finding Forrester, a new movie with
Sean Connery, playing a Pulitzer-prize winning author who has
become eccentric and reclusive, and Rob Brown, a sixteen-year
old African American boy who is driven by the urge to write.
Connery becomes Brown’s mentor, and Brown becomes Connery’s
friend. The movie inspires us to "write from the heart
first, then from the head." The movie also gave a clear
message that when we begin to follow our life purpose, we have
to move out of what is known and we have to leave our comfort
zone. Once we wake up to our uniqueness, we cannot go back to
a lesser level of awareness.
At the weekend conference following the retreat, we heard
from an editor, a literary agent, and three authors, all
sharing their experiences in the publishing business. Lindsay
Gibson, Psy.D., author of Who You Were Meant to Be, A Guide
to Finding or Recovering Your Life’s Purpose, gave a
riveting talk on the special characteristics of writers. She
received a burst of applause at the end of her talk. Everyone
was practically weeping after hearing her scientifically-based
theory on what makes writers different—and what cultural
mission they fulfill. Her ideas validated people’s life and
writing experience. It was at this point in the conference
that the idea for Lindsay to write a book on this subject was
instantly born! Magic happens when you are following your life
purpose.
Lindsay is soliciting responses (for her new book!) from
those of you who are writers or who want to write.
