Feng Shui in the Garden

by Nancilee Wydra

A Tree's Chi

Dear Nancilee,

I want to purchase a home but notice that there is a tree directly in front of the main door. I know it is bad because the chi of the tree overwhelms the house. Can we cure this besides chopping it down? Can we place a mirror above the front door to deflect the chi? What can I do?

Thank you.

******************************************************

Dear Kitty,

So many feng shui books scare the living day lights out of you about bad chi. First I need to clear up what is chi and when it can be bad. Chi describes how we feel about the surrounding environment. We absorb the environment through our senses. We see, feel, hear, smell and touch. When these are limited or offended in any way we feel less alive and consequently often don’t’ reach our maximum potential. Consider how you feel outside as compared to inside. The full sensorial input experienced outside feels so much more satisfying than the limited amount received inside. The sun’s warmth, the intermittent sounds of birds and animals and the scents of whatever is growing or around add to the pleasure of being alive. Inside there is far less chance for this kind of stimulation.

Thus when leaving your home if the tree blocks full visual access or is offensive in any way to you senses it diminishes you and thus impacts on your contentment.

Should that tree feel negative for any reason here’s some things to do:

  • Redirect the exit path from the door and turn it to face another direction
  • Hang a door chime on the door and stimulate hearing which compensates for the blocked sight.
  • Position a birdbath or hang a wind socket to either side of the tree to stimulate seeing that instead of the tree. The eye seeks out movement before a stationary object.

Hope you can implement one of these ideas.

Best future,

Nancilee Wydra
